2012 Gold Medal

Highly recommended, and a required for judges!

This is actually sort of embarassing. Steve McCarthy entered the Festival in 2004, took first place, and swept up the gold again in 2005. He didn't actually enter in 2006, but took special honors anyway. Every serious slivovitz drinker has a bottle of this on their shelf, and we had to make the Slivovitz Judges swear a mighty oath that they wouldn't drink the bottles in the Slivovitz Library. (unless it's some sort of Slivovitz emergency, or a really special occasion).

NOTE TO STEVE: Please start selling this in gallon jugs. The recycling guys are starting to complain about the stacks of 375ml bottles we're going through.

Clear Creek Blue Plum Brandy is simply the standard by which all other slivovitz is judged. We mean that literally, since we start off each ISTA Competition with a fresh bottle, and keep a glass in front of each judge during the entire session. It's helpful to have a reference standard when attempting to compare 40 different distillers, brands, and styles. The water clear, perfectly distilled Blue Plum Brandy offers a nice balance between the sweet plum aroma, the tangy skin notes, and just a hint of pit bite.

It's made with Oregon Blue Plums, water, and yeast. No added sugar or flavoring. Aging in glass softens the flavor profile, without adding the complexity that barrel or wood aging would bring.

If you're serious about your slivovitz, you need a bottle of Clear Creek in your library. Here's what Mr. McCarthy had to say in his 2004 Competition entry, "The heart of my product line is the eau-de-vie, all made according to the most old fashioned techniques. We use only pure whole fresh fruit, some of which we grow in our own orchards. We crush and ferment the whole fruit, and then distill the fermented mash in our small German-made pot stills. The result is very good, and very costly.". Blue Plum : Very nice stuff. Much more aromatic and much smoother than any European Blue Plum Brandy. Makes a great sorbet.

2012 Notes: about the Slivovitz

2006 Notes: Judges Standard - Year after year the judges start the competition by opening a fresh bottle of Steve McCarthy's Blue Plum Brandy. We recommend that you start each of your tasting sessions with a shot of Clear Creek Distillery Blue Plum Brandy. This will help you standardize your tastings, especially when you're switching between styles or have more than one tasting session. We chose Clear Creek for several reasons. It’s an excellent product, scoring Gold in the 2004 and 2005 Competition, and receiving special honors in 2006. It's easier to notice the plum aroma, skin notes, and pit bite in a plum brandy aged in glass. Finally, Steve McCarthy has a reputation for rigorous quality control, so we're confident that the 2007 batch will be as good as the '04, '05, '06.... So far, he hasn't let us down. Steve, thank you for your assistance and your excellent quality. We really couldn't do this without you, or your plum brandy.

2005 Notes:Gold Medal Winner - Best Glass-aged Slivovitz – Steve McCarthy did it again this year, with a smooth and slightly fruity slivovitz that the Judges couldn’t get enough of. Clear Creek was the slivovitz that we used to calibrate our palates, to make sure that we were being consistent during each tasting session. If you were distilling in your backyard, this is what you’d hope for.

2004 Notes:Gold Medal Winner - Best Glass-aged Slivovitz – Steve McCarthy distills a clearly superior slivovitz. We had to ration the tasting at the Festival, leaving many disappointed guests without a chance to taste the slivovitz the rest of us were raving about. The judge’s verdict? “This is the bottle you give to your Best Man at your wedding.” Clear Creek was the slivovitz that we used to calibrate our palates, to make sure that we were being consistent during each tasting session. Smooth, warm and fruity.
